TIMES JABAR, JAKARTA – Visiting Dieng in early August offers a rare opportunity to witness some of the region’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. Located in Central Java, the Dieng Plateau transforms into a mystical landscape as the dry season peaks, revealing breathtaking scenes that draw nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. This period, typically from August 1 to 7, marks the pinnacle of the dry season, bringing with it the formation of ice dew and the mesmerizing "white sea of clouds."

Ice Dew

One of the most enchanting sights in Dieng during this time is the appearance of ice dew, a phenomenon locally known as *embun es*. This delicate frost forms in the early morning hours, covering the landscape in a thin, shimmering layer of ice. The phenomenon is particularly visible in low-lying areas around the Arjuna and Setyaki temples, as well as on the farmland in Dieng Kulon Village, Batur District.

The formation of this ice dew is a result of the unique climatic conditions during the dry season. As explained by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the combination of low air temperatures and stable wind pressure during the early morning hours creates the perfect conditions for this frost to develop. However, due to the tropical climate of the region, the layer of ice is thin and only lasts for about four hours before melting away as the sun rises.

The "White Sea of Clouds"

In addition to the ice dew, visitors to Dieng in early August can also witness another extraordinary phenomenon: the "white sea of clouds." As morning breaks, a blanket of clouds often forms just above the ground, hovering about 1.5 meters above the surface. This cloud formation creates a surreal and dreamlike environment, where it feels as though you are walking among the clouds.

This phenomenon occurs due to the cool, stable air conditions combined with the region’s topography, which traps moisture and forms these low-lying clouds. For those looking to capture this ethereal sight, the best vantage points are from the hills or elevated structures around Dieng. The view is nothing short of magical, with the clouds gently rolling over the landscape, creating a scene that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale.

Optimal Viewing Conditions

Aryadi Darwanto, a local expert who has studied these phenomena, notes that the early mornings, just before sunrise, are the best times to witness both the ice dew and the "white sea of clouds." As the cold winds from Australia sweep through the region and the La Niña effect shifts north of Java, the temperatures in Dieng can drop to between -1°C and 3°C, providing the ideal conditions for these natural wonders to manifest.

Visiting Dieng in early August offers a truly unique experience for those seeking to connect with nature’s wonders. The combination of ice dew and the "white sea of clouds" creates a serene and otherworldly atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Whether you’re an avid photographer or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, this is the perfect time to explore the enchanting landscapes of Dieng. (*)
